Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), which describes combat techniques such as swordsmanship and fencing date back to the Middle Ages. The Sword Fencing Club in Abu Dhabi has much to offer for those interested in martial arts that are shown in blockbuster movies and fantasy drama series. The club is especially popular among children. The kids sessions use soft padded weaponry, such as spheres, axes, shields and swords, as well as, padded head, neck and body gear. From 18 years onwards, the members who have joined the club train using historical replicas, and dress in full fencing coloured uniforms. The idea of the sport is to replicate the historical techniques of fighting. These fighting techniques derive from historical manuals, which come from Germany, Italy, Spain throughout different centuries. The training sessions are technical, and there is also Arabian and Persian techniques taught. The art of sword fighting is on the rise in the Gulf region, as well as, several other countries.
